West Indies look to find form with bat as red-hot New Zealand eye ODI dominance

New Zealand host West Indies for a three-match ODI series after the visitors fell short in the preceding T20I set, which the hosts claimed 3-1. For the West Indies the ODIs carry added significance as they seek to rebuild their standing in the 50-over format and improve qualification prospects for the 2027 World Cup.

New Zealand’s momentum
The Kiwis arrive on the back of a dominant run in white-ball cricket at home, where they have been difficult to beat in recent series and recorded convincing wins in their last home ODI assignments, including a clean sweep of England. That consistent form has given them a clear confidence edge heading into the upcoming matches.

Fast-bowling assault
New Zealand’s seam attack has been a major weapon: in the recent home ODI series England were dismissed for under 225 in each game, with frontline pacers accounting for the bulk of wickets. Blair Tickner led that wicket tally, supported by Jacob Duffy and others, and the return of Matt Henry from a calf issue adds further experience to their pace unit.

West Indies pace outlook
Injuries to Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and Jediah Blades leave Jayden Seales as the most senior seamer in a comparatively inexperienced West Indies pace group. New faces such as Matthew Forde, Johann Layne and Shamar Springer have been introduced to bolster depth, while allround options will be expected to play containing roles with the ball.

Batting questions for West Indies
Batting consistency remains the West Indies’ primary concern. Keacy Carty has shown promise with multiple big scores but has struggled for runs in his most recent innings, and others such as Alick Athanaze and Amir Jangoo will need to convert starts into match-defining knocks. Captain Shai Hope remains a dependable presence, but the lineup requires more regular support to challenge New Zealand’s balanced attack.

Selection interest
The West Indies have recalled John Campbell to their ODI squad after a long absence from the format, replacing Brandon King; selectors will be watching closely to see if Campbell can transfer the form he showed in Test cricket into the 50-over arena on this comeback.

What to watch in the series

  • Whether New Zealand’s seamers can continue to suffocate opposition batting and extend their home dominance.
  • If Jayden Seales can marshal a young West Indies attack and produce breakthroughs in key moments.
  • Which West Indies batters can find the consistency needed to post or chase substantial totals against a high-quality pace unit.
