New Delhi: In a major step to strengthen the integrity of India’s digital identity system, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 2 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals. The move is part of a nationwide clean-up drive aimed at ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the Aadhaar database.
Data Sources for Verification
To identify and deactivate Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons, UIDAI has collaborated with multiple agencies including:
- Registrar General of India (RGI)
- State and Union Territory administrations
- Public Distribution System (PDS)
- National Social Assistance Program (NSAP)
UIDAI is also exploring partnerships with financial institutions and other organizations to strengthen data collection for this purpose.
Why Deactivation Matters
Aadhaar numbers are unique and never reassigned to another individual. However, once a person passes away, deactivation becomes essential to:
- Prevent identity fraud
- Stop unauthorized use of Aadhaar for welfare schemes or financial benefits
- Maintain the credibility of the national identity system
Reporting Facility on myAadhaar Portal
Earlier this year, UIDAI introduced a “Reporting of Death” service on the myAadhaar Portal. Currently available in 25 states and UTs integrated with the Civil Registration System, the facility allows family members to request deactivation of a deceased person’s Aadhaar.
The process requires:
- Authentication by the reporting family member
- Submission of the deceased person’s Aadhaar number, Death Registration Number, and demographic details
- Validation of the information before UIDAI takes action on deactivation
Integration with the remaining states and UTs is underway to make the service available nationwide.
Public Advisory
UIDAI has urged Aadhaar holders to report the death of family members through the portal after obtaining the official death certificate from registering authorities. This proactive step will help prevent misuse and ensure the Aadhaar system remains secure and trustworthy.
