Rajnath Singh Dedicates 125 BRO Projects to the Nation from Ladakh

Ladakh, December 7, 2025 : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a record 125 infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), marking the largest simultaneous dedication in the organisation’s history. Spread across two Union Territories (Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir) and seven states (Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Mizoram), the projects include 28 roads, 93 bridges, and 4 other works, completed at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore.

Strategic Connectivity Boost

  • The projects aim to strengthen last-mile connectivity to remote villages and forward military posts, enhancing both civilian access and defence preparedness.
  • Singh described the initiative as part of the government’s vision of “Viksit Bharat”, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to modernising border infrastructure.

Shyok Tunnel: Engineering Marvel

  • The event was held at the Shyok Tunnel on the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie Road, one of the key projects inaugurated.
  • The 920-metre cut-and-cover tunnel provides all-weather connectivity in a region prone to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme temperatures.
  • Singh emphasised that the tunnel will improve security, mobility, and rapid deployment capabilities in Ladakh.

Honouring the Armed Forces

  • The Defence Minister also virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.
  • He stressed that robust infrastructure in border areas is vital for security, logistics, tourism, employment, and disaster management.

Operation Sindoor & National Security

  • He praised the coordination between the Armed Forces, civil administration, and local residents, calling it a unique strength of India.

Economic Growth & Defence Self-Reliance

  • Highlighting India’s 8.2% GDP growth in Q2 of FY 2025-26, Singh linked connectivity to both security and economic prosperity.
  • He noted India’s progress in defence manufacturing, with production rising from ₹46,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.51 lakh crore in 2025, and exports increasing to nearly ₹24,000 crore.
  • Singh reiterated the government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, citing the BRO’s adoption of indigenous Class-70 modular bridges as a milestone in engineering self-reliance.

BRO’s Humanitarian Role

  • The BRO was commended for its rescue operations, including:
  • Saving 46 workers during the Mana avalanche in Uttarakhand.
  • Evacuating 1,600 stranded tourists in North Sikkim after landslides.
  • Assisting 5,000 pilgrims during a cloudburst in Chasoti, J&K.

Record Investments

  • BRO’s expenditure reached ₹16,690 crore in FY 2024-25, the highest ever, with a target of ₹18,700 crore for FY 2025-26.
  • In the past two years, 356 projects have been completed, underscoring BRO’s ability to operate in high-altitude, desert, flood-prone, and forest terrains.
  • The Union Budget 2025-26 further increased BRO’s allocation to ₹7,146 crore, reflecting its critical role in national security.

Voices of Leadership

  • Director General BRO, Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, praised the government’s support and the dedication of BRO personnel.
  • The event was attended by senior officials, governors, chief ministers, and military leaders, reaffirming the national importance of these projects.

Summary

With record investments, indigenous innovations, and humanitarian contributions, the BRO continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening both national security and regional development.
