Ladakh, December 7, 2025 : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a record 125 infrastructure projects of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), marking the largest simultaneous dedication in the organisation’s history. Spread across two Union Territories (Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir) and seven states (Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Mizoram), the projects include 28 roads, 93 bridges, and 4 other works, completed at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore.
Strategic Connectivity Boost
- The projects aim to strengthen last-mile connectivity to remote villages and forward military posts, enhancing both civilian access and defence preparedness.
- Singh described the initiative as part of the government’s vision of “Viksit Bharat”, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to modernising border infrastructure.

Shyok Tunnel: Engineering Marvel
- The event was held at the Shyok Tunnel on the Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie Road, one of the key projects inaugurated.
- The 920-metre cut-and-cover tunnel provides all-weather connectivity in a region prone to heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme temperatures.
- Singh emphasised that the tunnel will improve security, mobility, and rapid deployment capabilities in Ladakh.
Honouring the Armed Forces
- The Defence Minister also virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.
- He stressed that robust infrastructure in border areas is vital for security, logistics, tourism, employment, and disaster management.
Operation Sindoor & National Security
- Singh recalled Operation Sindoor, launched after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, crediting strong connectivity for its success.
- He praised the coordination between the Armed Forces, civil administration, and local residents, calling it a unique strength of India.
Economic Growth & Defence Self-Reliance
- Highlighting India’s 8.2% GDP growth in Q2 of FY 2025-26, Singh linked connectivity to both security and economic prosperity.
- He noted India’s progress in defence manufacturing, with production rising from ₹46,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.51 lakh crore in 2025, and exports increasing to nearly ₹24,000 crore.
- Singh reiterated the government’s push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, citing the BRO’s adoption of indigenous Class-70 modular bridges as a milestone in engineering self-reliance.
BRO’s Humanitarian Role
- The BRO was commended for its rescue operations, including:
- Saving 46 workers during the Mana avalanche in Uttarakhand.
- Evacuating 1,600 stranded tourists in North Sikkim after landslides.
- Assisting 5,000 pilgrims during a cloudburst in Chasoti, J&K.
Record Investments
- BRO’s expenditure reached ₹16,690 crore in FY 2024-25, the highest ever, with a target of ₹18,700 crore for FY 2025-26.
- In the past two years, 356 projects have been completed, underscoring BRO’s ability to operate in high-altitude, desert, flood-prone, and forest terrains.
- The Union Budget 2025-26 further increased BRO’s allocation to ₹7,146 crore, reflecting its critical role in national security.
