NHAI Launches AI-Driven NSV Road Surveys Covering 20,933 km in 23 States

New Delhi : In a major step toward improving road quality and commuter experience, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) across 23 states, covering 20,933 km of National Highway stretches. This initiative aims to enhance road safety, ensure timely maintenance, and support data-driven infrastructure planning.

High-Tech Monitoring for Better Roads
The NSVs are equipped with cutting-edge technologies including:

  • 3D laser scanners
  • 360-degree high-resolution cameras
  • Differential GPS (DGPS)
  • Inertial Measurement Units (IMU)
  • Distance Measuring Indicators (DMI)

These systems will automatically detect and record road defects such as surface cracks, potholes, and patches, eliminating the need for manual inspections.

AI-Powered Analysis and Asset Management
All data collected will be uploaded to NHAI’s AI-based portal ‘Data Lake’, where a dedicated team of experts will analyze it to generate actionable insights. The findings will guide corrective maintenance, improve road safety, and support long-term asset management through the Road Asset Management System (RAMS).
Regular Surveys and Transparent Monitoring

NSV-based surveys will be conducted:

  • Before the commencement of any highway project
  • At six-month intervals thereafter

This ensures continuous monitoring of 2, 4, 6, and 8-lane highway projects, aligning with Government of India’s guidelines for infrastructure upkeep.

Bids Invited for Implementation
To operationalize this initiative, NHAI has invited bids from qualified companies to supply and manage the NSV systems, reinforcing its commitment to smart infrastructure and commuter-centric development.
