ISRO’s LVM3-M6 Launch Places Heaviest Satellite in Orbit

India’s space program achieved another landmark with the successful launch of the LVM3-M6 mission, which carried the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite into orbit.

Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, congratulated ISRO on the achievement, noting that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the agency continues to set new milestones, reinforcing India’s credibility and global standing in space technology.

A Historic Milestone

The mission placed the heaviest satellite ever launched by an Indian rocket into its designated orbit, marking a major leap in India’s heavy-lift capabilities. This success strengthens India’s position in the international commercial launch market.

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed that the LVM3-M6 vehicle performed flawlessly, precisely injecting the satellite into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). He highlighted that this was the third fully commercial mission of LVM3, underscoring its reliability and world-class performance.

About the Satellite

The BlueBird Block-2 satellite is part of a next-generation constellation designed to deliver space-based cellular broadband connectivity directly to standard smartphones, without requiring specialized equipment.

This mission was executed under a commercial agreement between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) and AST SpaceMobile (USA), showcasing India’s growing role as a trusted launch service provider for advanced communication missions worldwide.

LVM3: India’s Heavy-Lift Workhorse

The Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3), developed by ISRO, is India’s most powerful rocket.

  • Configuration: Three-stage design with two solid strap-on boosters (S200), a liquid core stage (L110), and a cryogenic upper stage (C25).
  • Specifications: Lift-off mass of 640 tonnes, height of 43.5 meters, and payload capacity of 4,200 kg to Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
  • Past Missions: Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and two OneWeb missions carrying 72 satellites.
  • Previous Flight: The LVM3-M5/CMS-03 mission, successfully launched on November 2, 2025.
  • The LVM3-M6 mission marks the 6th operational flight of the vehicle and the deployment of the largest commercial communications satellite in LEO from Indian soil.

Strategic Impact

With this achievement, India has once again demonstrated its technological maturity in complex heavy-lift missions, reinforcing confidence in indigenous launch systems and elevating the country’s stature in the global space sector.
