Indian Railways to Launch Vande Bharat Sleeper Train in December 2025

New Delhi : Indian Railways is preparing to introduce its first Vande Bharat sleeper train, with the prototype rake undergoing modifications after extensive trial runs. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the new sleeper variant is expected to debut in December 2025.

🚆 Why the Sleeper Version Matters
The Vande Bharat Express has already become the face of premium day travel with its AC chair car services. The upcoming sleeper version is designed to redefine overnight journeys, offering comfort levels that aim to surpass the Rajdhani Express on long‑distance routes.

Trials and Modifications

  • The first rake faced delays due to trial feedback.
  • Adjustments to bogies and seats are being carried out to improve passenger comfort.
  • Both the first and second trains are undergoing refinements to address issues identified during testing.
  • Though the changes are relatively minor, they are being prioritized to ensure a smooth passenger experience.

Safety and Standards
The Railway Ministry approved the introduction of 16‑coach sleeper trains on October 28, along with safety and performance upgrades:

  • Arc Fault Detection Devices for fire prevention
  • Repositioned AC ducts
  • CCTV fire‑survival cables
  • Compliance with European fire safety (EN 45545) and crash resistance (EN 15227) standards
  • Relocation of emergency alarm buttons for better accessibility
Concerns about interior finishing and construction quality have also been flagged for improvement.
