New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw ushered in the New Year with a major announcement at Rail Bhawan, revealing that the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will soon begin operations between Guwahati (Assam) and Howrah (West Bengal).
The Minister confirmed that all trials, testing, and certification processes for the train have been successfully completed. The inaugural run is scheduled for January, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially flag off the service.

Vaishnaw described the launch as a landmark achievement for Indian Railways, highlighting that 2026 will bring sweeping reforms focused on passenger convenience and modernization.
Route and Capacity
The new service will benefit districts including Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal.

The train will feature 16 coaches:
- 11 AC three-tier coaches
- 4 AC two-tier coaches
- 1 AC first-class coach
Together, they will accommodate around 823 passengers.
Design and Comfort
The Vande Bharat Sleeper introduces a newly engineered bogie with advanced suspension for smoother rides. Interiors have been ergonomically designed, with improved ladders, cushioned berths, and enhanced safety features.

The timetable is planned to suit overnight journeys—departing in the evening and arriving at the destination early morning.
Culinary Experience
Passengers will enjoy region-specific menus: Assamese cuisine on trains starting from Guwahati, and Bengali delicacies on departures from Kolkata, adding a cultural flavor to the journey.
