Pune’s public transport system is set for a major upgrade with the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approving Phase‑2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The sanction covers Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug), adding significant new capacity to the city’s growing metro network.
This approval follows earlier clearances for Line 2A (Vanaz–Chandani Chowk) and Line 2B (Ramwadi–Wagholi/Vitthalwadi), making Phase‑2 a transformative step in Pune’s urban mobility journey.

- Length & Stations: 31.6 km of elevated tracks with 28 stations.

The new corridors will connect diverse neighbourhoods — from Kharadi’s IT hub and Hadapsar’s industrial zone to Warje’s residential clusters and Khadakwasla’s tourist belt. By traversing key routes such as Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, the metro will ease traffic congestion, improve safety, and promote eco‑friendly commuting.

- 2028: 4.09 lakh daily passengers (3.23 lakh on Line 4, 85,555 on Line 4A).
- 2038: Nearly 7 lakh riders.
- 2048: 9.63 lakh riders.
- 2058: Over 11.7 lakh riders, with Line 4 alone expected to carry 9.33 lakh.
Implementation
The project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha‑Metro), which has already begun pre‑construction activities including surveys and design work.
