India’s Longest and Most Powerful Hydrogen Train Set to Roll Out

New Delhi : Indian Railways has completed the development of its first hydrogen-powered train, a pioneering project designed under the specifications of the Research, Design & Standards Organization (RDSO). The initiative aims to showcase hydrogen traction technology as part of the country’s push toward sustainable and eco‑friendly transport solutions.

Hydrogen Plant at Jind
To support the train, a dedicated hydrogen production facility has been set up in Jind. The plant uses electrolysis, a key process in generating green hydrogen, ensuring clean fuel supply for the pilot project.

Key Features of the Train

  • Made in India: Designed and manufactured domestically, reflecting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • Record-Breaking Scale: Currently the world’s longest hydrogen train with 10 coaches and the most powerful broad-gauge hydrogen train at 2400 kW.
  • Configuration: Two Driving Power Cars of 1200 kW each, supported by eight passenger coaches.
  • Eco-Friendly: Produces zero carbon dioxide emissions; the only by‑product is water vapour.
  • Innovation Milestone: Marks the first full-scale design, prototype manufacturing, and deployment of hydrogen traction technology in Indian Railways.

Future Outlook
As the train and its infrastructure are still in the pilot stage, cost comparisons with conventional traction systems are not yet feasible. However, the project highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to advancing alternative energy technologies and building a cleaner, greener future for the nation’s transport sector. Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared details of the project in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
