Shubman Gill exits Eden Gardens Test early after neck discomfort

India captain Shubman Gill was forced off the field on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after experiencing sudden neck stiffness that left him unable to continue.

What happened
Gill came out to bat in the morning session shortly after the dismissal of Washington Sundar in the 35th over. Within a few deliveries he began to show signs of pain and limited movement, holding his neck as the team physiotherapists rushed on. After three balls of the innings he retired hurt and left the playing area for assessment.

Team impact and uncertainty
The unexpected withdrawal of India’s skipper was an immediate setback for the hosts, who lost a top-order bat and a leader at a crucial phase of the match. At the time of writing it remains unclear whether Gill will be fit to resume later in the Test.

Praise from the cricketing fraternity
Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently offered high praise for Gill’s captaincy, calling him “a perfect captain” and lauding his performance leading India during the England tour. Ganguly highlighted the difficulty of captaining in challenging overseas conditions at a young age and wished Gill continued success across formats.

Captaincy record
Under Gill’s leadership India have started the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle strongly, with four wins, two losses and one draw from seven Tests played so far.

What to watch next
Team medical updates and the match scoreboard will determine Gill’s availability for the remainder of the Test. The visitors’ bowling plans and India’s batting order may have to be adjusted depending on the captain’s recovery and whether he can take the field again.
