New Delhi, India :
On Monday evening, a car explosion occurred near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi. The vehicle—identified as a Hyundai i20—detonated while waiting at a traffic signal, killing at least 13 people and injuring over 20.
The federal government has formally classified the incident as a terrorist act. The probe is being led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and supported by other law-enforcement and intelligence agencies.
According to initial findings, the explosion appears to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) placed in the vehicle. Investigators say a larger terror module may have been involved, with plans to target six locations in the Delhi-NCR region on December 6.
In response to the attack, security has been heightened across major cities, transport hubs and sensitive sites, including checkpoints, vehicle inspections and increased surveillance. Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister has pledged the strictest punishment for those responsible.
Online, efforts are underway to curb misinformation and prevent communal tensions as a result of the blast.
