NHAI launches widening work to ease congestion at Subroto Park Air Force Station, Delhi

New Delhi, India :
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun a carriageway widening project at Subroto Park Air Force Station in New Delhi to smooth traffic between Dhaula Kuan and the airport. The left-hand side carriageway (towards Gurugram) will be expanded from two lanes to four lanes to remove a recurring bottleneck where the road narrows at the Parade Road underpass.

What the works involve

  • Carriageway expansion: LHS lane count increased from 2 to 4 to restore continuous traffic flow towards Gurugram.
  • Infrastructure changes: A nearby metro pillar has been constricting the carriageway; to gain space, contractors will relocate a drain, adjust the peripheral road alignment, and modify certain Air Force Station structures.
  • New pedestrian link: A foot overbridge will be constructed near the start of the RTR flyover to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity.
  • Drainage upgrade: The scheme includes an enhanced drainage system to speed up removal of rain and surface water.

Environmental and safety measures

  • Greening and pollution control: The project plan includes tree transplantation and on-site measures such as water sprinklers and anti-smoke systems to limit dust and emissions during construction.
  • Traffic management: Traffic marshals, tow-away cranes, and safety cones will be deployed along the national highway to ensure safe and orderly vehicle movement while works are underway.

Timeline and expected benefits
Work is scheduled for completion in approximately six months. Once finished, the widened section is expected to relieve the current choke point, strengthen Delhi–Gurugram connectivity, and improve the overall transport network across the National Capital Region for commuters and local residents.

Quick facts

  • Location: Subroto Park Air Force Station, New Delhi
  • Scope: LHS carriageway widening from 2 lanes to 4 lanes; new FOB; drainage improvements; environmental and traffic safety measures
  • Estimated duration: ~6 months
